The type of absorbent you use will depend greatly on the type of Hazmat Spilt. Typically Absorbents for Petroleum or Oil based spillages cannot be used for Aggressive Chemical Spillages. Oil Based Absorbents such as a Coco Peat Absorbent is a Hydro Carbon
AfriSupply can assist with both a Chemical Absorbent Scatter or Acid Absorbent Powder. The type of absorbent depends on factors such viscosity, if the chemical is liquid or a resin and also how aggressive the Chemical is. Acid absorbent powder is recommended for aggressive chemicals as it congeals and neutralizes on contact.
Coco Peat is a premium oil absorbent that absorbs and encapsulates the oil or Hazmat. This ensures that seepage or leeching of the Hazmat does not take place and that once the absorbent is in contact with the coco peat it absorbs efficiently and immediately. Also very importantly Coco Peat is non-flammable which is a mandatory safety requirement when absorbing Hazmat Spillages.
Coco Peat is a Hydrocarbon, which means that it will repel water and absorb only the oil or petroleum based Hazmat. Coco Peat is ideal to for spillages on the sea or water.
Coco Peat Absorbent is made from the highest grade of Coco Husk. Contrary to popular belief saw dust in not an absorbent nor is it a hydro-carbon, it is a main by-product of sawmills and relatively speaking cheap thus commonly and incorrectly used within industry.
Prior to milling wood is often chemically treated to extend the quality and life span of the wood this can pose serious environmental risks and also unknown substances mixed with Hazmat materials can have a reaction posing a further threat.
Coco Husk Peat Absorbent has the following key attributes that makes it an excellent absorbent for Oil based spillages: Coco peat is a 100% natural, renewable and bio-degradable organic material extracted from the husks of coconuts. Its high lignin and cellular structure makes it an ideal medium with a large capacity for the swift and effective absorption of hydrocarbons, including oil, grease and petroleum.
